HOP EXTRACT?

What is hop extract?

I noticed that some of the MB products show "hop extract" as an ingredient. Also Ironmaster, etc.

A quick Ms Google search shows many webpages re hop extract, but little or no usable information for homebrewers, etc.

Maybe some of you have already run down the giz on this already. Probably never would have caught my eye but for the hop shortage and all.

It is malt extract with hops pre-added. Sometimes you will see it as "beer mix" or HME.

On the other hand UME(MB); LME, and DME are all malt extract without the hops. You would add the hops.

Kind of, he's talking about hop extract, they isomerize(sp) out the hop oils. Then the oils are boiled down to make an extract.
They are a real bi%^t to work with unless you know what you are doing, it is real easy to over use and turn beer in to crap.
My LHBS has some they sell them in real small bottles, like the fruit extracts come in.
They said they are mainly used by the producers of HME as a way to add hops to the malt extract they produce.

They're normally used by commercial brewers. Tough to find in small quantities. Hop Union has some info on 'em.
