I just made sharing recipes a little easier...

You may now attach to your posts .BSM files for BeerSmith and .XML QBrew BeerXML files to your posts. I also enabled .PDF, so that technical documents may be shared easier.

Looking forward to downloading some of your recipes!

So, to share a QBrew file...
In QBrew, Go to File>Export...> Browse to where you want to Export (say, your Desktop)> Change the "Save as Type:" to BeerXML Recipes (*.XML)> Name it and save it.
Then you can use File Manager in full reply mode to post your recipe....

Woah, Something screwy is going on!
It is 5.3 ABV...
But when I download it somehow gets converted to metric -the recipe was in Imperial and I get 2.9%.
Huh, I do not know what is going on!
Someone else attach a QBrew file to test!

Here's an XML and PDF export.

EDIT: There isn't a way to preview before posting? The PDF works. I'll try the XML one more time.

EDIT 2: Does the XML have to be opened in Qbrew?

Hmmm...
I think that my QBrew is Fracked.
It converted your recipe to Metric, even though I have QBrew set to Imperial...
OG 1.069?
I converted the recipe that you posted here and at least QBrew seems to have converted it right.

Ah. I usually export to PDF and that should show a nice readable file to anyone even if they don't have Qbrew. But I see Qbrew can open the XML file to fool with right in Qbrew.

D Rock. Your MooseDrooled.xml does not open in my Qbrew but your Dubbub's Robust Porter.xml works fine.

Well apparently there is something going on with my QBrew.
It is spitting out bad XML and converting to Metric on the import.
Guess I need to reinstall...

I can open TP's 'The Ale Of Worms' which comes in at 6.7% ABV. All measurements are metric.

Yes, I do. Even though now I don't do much with Mr. Beer kits. I did when I first loaded it. But I am wondering how a Mr. Beer partial mash would turn out. Maybe 2 cans of HME and half and half base and specialty grains.

Yes, I do. Even though now I don't do much with Mr. Beer kits. I did when I first loaded it. But I am wondering how a Mr. Beer partial mash would turn out. Maybe 2 cans of HME and half and half base and specialty grains.

Reason for asking was to see it different dbases produced different results on the downloaded files.

I think you need to export or save as XML to make your recipe available to both Beer Smith and Qbrew users. PDF is gonna work better for everyone to see but it can't be opened in the beer programs.

Posting both an XML and a PDF would let everyone make the best use of your information.

The Professor's copy of QBrew is v0.4.0.

D Rock's weights are in grams...which may be why QBrew displays English units (kg).

Not sure what any of this means. Just reporting my findings.

Qbrew v0.4.0 running on Ubuntu Linux.

Not sure if the XML wants to open in the units it was saved or the default units of the downloader but they should be correct in any case.

v0.4.1

The numbers are correct and if you double click on them they change to pounds. No way, it seems, to change the the batch size from Liters to gallons.
Strange stuff. Must be in the code that produces the XML.

And, Ding, when I said that yours worked, I meant with BeerSmith.

I tried both D Rock's and The Professor's and they both were listed in metric (kg).

Turns out the standards for BeerXML are:
Quote:
Units

For this portion of the standard ALL units must be fixed. It is the responsibility of the importing or exporting program to convert to and from the units below if needed.
Weight Units

All weights will be measured in Kilograms (kg). For small values the exporting program will make an effort to preserve as many significant digits as possible.
Volume Units

All volumes will be measured in Liters (l). For small values the exporting program will make an effort to preserve as many significant digits as possible.
Temperature Units

All temperatures will be measured in degrees Celsius.

Huh, I do not know what is going on!
Someone else attach a QBrew file to test!
Figured this out. The imported XML shows the LME as "Steeped". Change it to "Extract" and the numbers are right.

Actually, looking at this some more, I think QBrew is handling the XML just fine, the OG difference is the way that QBrew and BeerSmith handle Extract Potential differently. One of the reasons that I started using BeerSmith was its more realistic handling of Steeped grains.
But importing the BeerSmith into Qbrew, minus the Metric issue, does seem to work. QBrew just gives more potential for steeped grains. Hence the 1.068 vs 1.064.
And yes the recipe comes in at BeerSmiths more conservative Calculations.

So how do you switch to standard measurements? Am I missing something here, some of the recipes on here wouldn't import into Qbrew, most did including my own, but evertythings in kg for weight...are we not able to do this after all or what?

That is correct... It actually came in a little higher because I scaled the recipe to 2.5 gallons but ended up with about 2.25 in the fermenter... Actually gravity came in at 1.110...

Does anyone have a recipe that would be similar to Bud Light Lime? My wife loves the BL Limes, and I wanted to see how close I could come to replicating.

Thanks!

Njbipa you might want to start a new thread in the clone section. It's hard to duplicate light beers with the Mr. Beer process because the big guys use enzymes to help reduce the body and calories. You might get something similar by brewing up a basic recipe like the American Blonde or Cowboy lager and adding some lime juice and zest.

MrB has a Caribbean Lime lager recipe.

I made it two summers ago and it turned out well. The lime presence was a bit strong when the beer was young but mellowed nicely as it aged (12 weeks in the bottle)

I'm new to MrBeerfans.com, I have 2 kits which I have made with their original pale ale, one I added clover honey to & the other Brown Cane Sugar.
I want to continue using my kit to make other beers, but want to make it from my own ingredients instead of using the pre-mixed cans, but do not know how much or what exactly to put into my wort.
I like almost every beer I have tried with exception to cheap lagers (which give me a bad headache).
Please help me with some recipies, I just cracked open the 1st bottle of the second batch, so I fear I will be out of beer before the next batch is finished.

You're own ingredients? Do you mean LME (Liquid Malt Extract) from the LHBS (Local Home Brew Store)? It's easy to add fermentables like honey and brown sugar but you need barley malt in some form in order to actually make beer. Unless you go AG (All Grain) and make your own extract it wouldn't be your own ingredients. Maybe you could be a little more specific. Sorry, just trying to understand.

Poke around in the Extract Recipe section of MrBFans where you'll find plenty-o-ideas.

Is there a commercially-made beer you like?
That would be a good starting point.

Do you have a LHBS nearby?

Adding 1 lb. DME (dry malt extract) or 1.1-1.3 lbs LME (liquid malt extract) instead of the Mr. Beer booster is a great first step to take in improving Mr. Beer's basic recipes.

Or, as Herb said, there's a lot of great ideas available in the extract recipes section. Many may involve steeping grains, but if that's not a step you're ready to take, you can make some good recipes with just extract (DME or LME), hops and yeast pretty easily.

Give us some more ideas as to what type of beers you particularly like, and we may be able to give you some more ideas for recipes. smile

Poke around in the Extract Recipe section of MrBFans where you'll find plenty-o-ideas.

Is there a commercially-made beer you like?
That would be a good starting point.
Give us a style and I am sure you will get plenty of suggestions. I am sure that you know that our LHBS is Stomp Them Grapes. They sell Briess extract in bulk for $2.59/lb. That would be yer start.

Is it safe to assume that you are the young lady that I met at BB&B buying your starter kit?

Oh and sorry, I edited your original post as it used black type and using the Dark Skin for the forums made it look like a blank post.

If you like Blue Moon, an easy way to get something similar is to make Mr. Beer's Witty Monk recipe, but use half a pack of Fermentis Safbrew T-58 yeast (ferment it at 68-70*--fermentation temps, not ambient). I think you'd be really pleased with the results.

I created two Blue Moon type recipes using the basic Mr. Beer ingredients plus a few additional readily available adjuncts.

My daughter is a big fan of both Blue Moon and the now defunct Sam Adams White Ale, she liked both samples we tried at bottling time. I brewed the recipes at the beginning of May and I just moved a few bottles into the fridge last night. They should be nice and cold when we try them later today, look for my updates.

I found my recipes on BeerTools, converted them to 2 gallon batch size, and recreated them @ Brewmasterswarehouse ...works pretty good.

(*For now I'm going with Bishop's Two-gallon Keghouse, aka BTK Brewing... let me know what you think of my recipes!)
