This is just a thread for your thoughts.

As the "Brewer Of The Month" was developing people had some different thoughts about what it was.

To me it's a way to have a little fun putting our two cents in and seeing who we wind up with as BOTM.

What does the "Brewer Of The Month" mean to you?

I see "Brewer of the Month" as a way to recognize the people on the forum who have been helpful, shared innovative ideas, or just generally help make being a part of this community awesome.

to me, it means being an active member on the forums... helping out others with recipe ideas, troubleshooting problems, equipment advice, answering trivia questions (or at least making a humorous guess), pointing people in the direction of the right answer (like a BN podcast, or chapter in "How TO Brew", or a thread on some other forum)... while practicing good brewing habits... not necessarily brewing on a regular and consistent basis... but having something brewing/brewed in the month you are nominated.

BOTM to me describes a member of "all of the above".

A member who Brews to their liking, someone who also practices good brewing techniques and is always growing/advancing in the hobby while sharring great ideas with or about the forum. One who shares thier recipes, experiences and updates those posts or threads occordingly. Someone who shares what they have come to know with their own brewing not just what others say or what the description on the bag of hops/yeast says. Someone who is active on the forum and willing to help out in any way they can. Someone who keeps their attitude and opinions at bay for the good of the forum with a positive, encouraging outlook.

Good post, luckily we don't have much negative attitude around here.
I guess it could mean different things to different members.
Normally I vote for who had the hot hand during the month but
there are so many guys who have been here for a while that are
certainly most deserving. It's a tough pick for me every month
picking between a veteran or someone new having a good month.
Sometimes I picked the winner, sometimes I didn't.

I agree a lot with what everybody's said so far, but what I want to add what I don't think brewer of the month has to have--the BotM, in my mind, doesn't have to have the most brewing experience, nor do they have to brew all-grain beers. As long as they're here, they're brewing and expanding their brewing knowledge (especially if they're trying out new things, be it new products nobody else has tried yet, or experimenting in their actual brewing), and helpful to the rest of the community (when they can be), I think they're a viable candidate for BoTM.

I've nominated active members for different reasons. We're all brewers here; some extract, some partials and some AG. Sometimes the BOTM to me is someone who gave me a helpful answer to a question. Sometimes it's just for their impressive general brewing knowledge and experience. I once nom'd a brewer, not because of his brewing experience, but simply because he showed concern for my wife and I... as many of you have, but most of whom have already been BOTM.

This is not only the most helpful beer forum on the Web, but also the friendliest

The abilty to help others, to know what they are talking about when it come to brewing, to be able to direct a newb to the right answer, the ability to brew all types of beers, and on all types of equipment using different techniques, the ability to write their own recipes. To freely share knowledge with others. The ability to take a punch, and not get offended. To care for others outside of just brewing, to forward the good name of the LBK!
etc, etc, etc....

Well...

If it's really going to be "Brewer" of the Month, nominees should be supported by some kind of brewing resume. You don't have to be strict or detailed. Just supply reasons to support the nomination. It could even include non active or semi active members... if you can give a valid reason why.

I don't care if we have fun with the BOTM by joking around and having the campaigns and what not. It's been a lot of fun. That sort of thing should be named something else though. It's a blast, but isn't brewing related. It could just as easily been called "Chef" of the Month or "Gardener" of the Month.

Hey, a little more fun or a little more serious... I'm good either way, but it kind of needs to go one way or the other. The two don't mix or do they? Maybe I just don't see the light.

It's a lot of things to me. I was having fun with the campaign, but I did it because I personally wanted to see Mammy as BOTM. In one of the videos I did, "Pamela Anderson" said she was voting for him because he has so many posts. What I was getting at was that he's made a profound impact on the forum with so many helpful posts. To me, he's a yeast expert also and is very knowledgeable with partial brewing... plus, he makes me laugh.

I've nominated people for reasons that had nothing to do with beer, because we're all brewers here: that's a given. So I take other factors into consideration. smile

Sorry if I got out of hand this round.. even if I personally didn't, I may have instigated some of the over the top'edness.

I think there are some people that got a little offended with the fun we were having.I do think we were all doing it in good fun though. At least I know I was.I do think Pudge is right though we need to keep it brew related to keep it fair for everyone here.

Don't apologize. It's been fun. There has been more participation during this BOTM than all others combined. I think it just brings up the question... is this where we want to go with it? It's a reasonable debate, not a blame game.

I was just having fun with it as well which is why i would through out the everyone really deserves it sporadically because all the nominees really did. I agree though that a decision should probably be made. definately I think though the posts should probably be confined to the Brewer of the Month subforum and not other posts even when answering questions and what not. But it was an interesting race.

I thought it was some good humor for qualified candidates. Had it been pushing someone who joined the forum a week or two earlier, that would be a different story.
