The website http://www.beeradvocate.com has a very very nice site. No where on there have I seen them trash MrBeer. They have a section called Beer 101. They can actually help teach you to review beer, and how to review even if you don't like the style you are reviewing. Many have asked for a topic area where we review the MrBeer beers, before we do that I would strongly recommend if you review the beers here look at the Advocate site so you can be much more objective.. remember we want what you taste not what you like.... on reviews...

Great site and the brothers are home brewers. Boston seems to have a bit of a corner on the beer brewing market as far as brew pubs go.

I'm a prolific reviewer of beers on Beeradvocate. My username is ... wait for it ... Overlord.
I wouldn't go so far as to say they don't trash Mr. Beer, because it happens in the homebrewing forum. You can see my thread from December or January for examples.
I love the site, and I've been trying to knock off the BA top 100 for a while now. Only ten or so more to go!

I think its just a bit more vocal because we have BA run out of here. I have some issues w/ the brothers alstrom but that site is a great resource for all the beer fans out there.
But there really aren't that many places in Boston and the surrounding city that brew up their own beer although we've got a handful of places that take beer *very* seriously.

There can certainly beer some serious beer snobbery at beeradvocate, but if you can get past that, it's a tremendous resource for beer info. I am certainly no expert, but when I buy something new, I like to read about so I know exactly what I am smelling and tasting. Doing that is really helping me get an understanding of what the different aromas and flavors are.

Don't know how I missed this thread. I go to Beer Advocate all the time to check out new (to me) beers. Since I'm a new beer-lover (been drinking red wine all these years), I figure I'll skip right to the best beers. Saves a lot of time!

Don't let them dictate what beers to try though. I've found that I disagree with their overall ratings rather frequently. For example, they give Boddington's and Guinness much lower scores than I'd give them, and they list Speedway Stout as one of their best beers but I think it's awful. Overall though, my beer palate is easy to please so I don't find many beers I dislike.

I try to go by the overall rating, and not just the brothers'. I figure if a few hundred people think it's good, I probably will, too!

I never would have tried La Fin du Monde if it weren't for that place, and damned if that ain't one the best beers I've ever had.

"No where on there have I seen them trash MrBeer" oh yeah, go to the homebrewing forum and ask a question and mention you use a mr beer kit, like half the replies will be along the line of " get a real brewkit"

You're going to find haters wherever you go, regardless of what it is they're hating. Mr. Beer can indeed be considered a newbie kit, especially if you're still learning and implementing the basic recipes. However, you can grow in experience and extravagance while brewing with the Mr. Beer kit, and it gives you a great base to which you can add your own ingredients to make the recipe yours.

I always liked to say, "No such thing as a bad beer, it's just that some beers are better than others!"

I agree completely. Boddington's, Guinness, and even Yuengling Black and Tan are some of my standbys that do not bode well in the reviews. Try a beer for yourself if you are really curious. If you know it's a style you usually enjoy you should definitely make your own decision.
My husband reviews each beer he makes or buys. He copied something online with a rating score for things like hops, clarity and carbonation. He even peals the label off each bottle and glues it to the sheet.
these guys work for northern brewer and have been putting on a pretty good internet TV show for the past few months... while it's not important to know exactly what they're talking about (you'd have to go back and watch all 11 episodes to know everything they make a reference to), pay attention to how they review and taste their beers and samples. they do a pretty good job and you can SEE how others review beers.

Fermenting:
Carbing / Conditioning: #24 Keep Calm and Brew On E.S.B. #21 Colonial Ale
Drinking: Pipeline is empty
On Deck (...eventually): Hefeweizen, Scottish Ale, Kenny's Fat Tire clone
I live BA, but when I made a forum topic asking for help with my birthday present (Mr. Beer and a St. Patty's Stout) they ripped me a new one for not steeping my own grains and mash and etc...
But that's the only time I've ever really been displeased with the site.
