The method they use here looks so simple, and alot of what i read about all grain brewing requires a lot of equipment and is somewhat over my head.
The pros of the way they are doing the partial mash this is obviously its simplicity, what would be some of the cons? (mash efficiency, not easy for 5g batches, etc)
Could i do my 1st AG this way making just a 2 gallon batch?

AG doesn't require lots of equipment and it's really easy. Look into BiaB. brew in a bag. you use a $3 paint strainer bag from lowes and a 5 gallon brew pot and just mash in there. A few guys around here do it and it works well.

Finished this just a little while ago. I followed the Basic Brewing video. The only differences i had were that my Amerillo hops were whole leaf, and i added the HME at flameout.

So in the video, after the boil they use an ice bath to cool down the wort. Then pour it into the LBK leaving behind what they called trub (tho i thiught that was the yeast ect at the bottom of the LBK. Hope tha t clears it up. If not watch the vid the professor posted withthis thread.

if you cooled the wort, you're fine... the act of cooling the wort (as quickly as possible) will get you a "cold break"... so, yes, you're fine.

Yes. But unfortunately everything went into the LBK. no big deal. it'll settle into the trub in the fermenter... and it actually can be a nice place for the yeast to live,,, and i think there's some nutrient in there, too. all is well.

yup, i tend to dump everything in the LBK since I can't seem to get my water volumes right lol. it will all settle out during fermentation.

So I am an avowed fermenter sampler. I tasted this recipe (in which i followed the basic brewing video) and I have to say. It is turning out very tasty. Can't wait to see how it tastes when done. It is very grapefruit forward right now.

It is really great. Big citrus aroma. Hoppy, but not overly bitter. I can hardly wait (my first partial mash too).

Ok, bottled this one yesterday. I have dubbed it Howling wheat, and it tasted great flat so I can't wait for it to carb and condition.

Well the results are in. It only conditioned a week but it tasted great and the carbonation was good after a few days in the fridge. I know 2-2-2 but if it tastes good, why wait.
So the Howling wheat was light in color with about a half inch head that took a min or two to fade to the lace which remained for theentire glass. Aroma was decidedly of grapefruit. Flavor was crisp and dry with a pleasent slightly acidic start (could be due to grapefruit aroma), but with a wheat finish. Easy drinking and very refreshing.
Went well with spicy food (jerk chicken). I will definately be making this again.
Professor I know this was your original post....this one is definatly worth a try IMO.

...Professor I know this was your original post....this one is definatly worth a try IMO. It's kinda funny. I had a thought about introducing an easy partial mash to new Mr. Beer Brewers. Shortly after I started the thread Basic Brewing did almost exactly that for one of their shows. And now a new brewer has made a first partial mash. The thread has not been hijacked, and congrats. Hope someone else tries an easy partial mash as well.

Okay, so I missed out on getting a Mr. Beer refill pack on sale. So I just went out and bought one not-on-sale. I still need to see if my LHBS can hold up their end for some needed supplies.
I'm thinking something like this: High Country Canadian Draft (as a Cream Ale) 6 row malt and flaked corn with US-05 Sounds good. Have you thought about using some booster instead of flaked corn, or did you just get the HMEs and not the International series kit? Now, booster won't add the corn character or sweetness (which I happen to like), but it will do fine elsewise. Octoberfest Vienna Lager (as a Vienna Lager) Vienna/Munich malt with either a lager yeast or cold fermented ale yeast. I vote munich and W-34/70 or the liquid yeast equivalent.[/quote] Whispering Wheat Weizenbier (not sure, classic wheat beer or American wheat) Wheat and barley malt with either a wheat yeast or US-05 C'mon now, use a real wheat yeast...or maybe T-58, if you must go dry. It's not an American Wheat without some finishing hops, after all.

...Have you thought about using some booster instead of flaked corn, or did you just get the HMEs and not the International series kit?... Part of the fun of doing this would be using different ingredients. I have not considered using booster at all. Thought a Cream Ale brew would be nice. Comments on other stuff will await on what I am actually able to get from the LHBS. Except for: ...or maybe T-58(for the Weizenbier)... Turning it into a Witbier is a good 3rd choice.

Hi Prof,
I followed the video for my last batch, too, which is now conditioning. Instead of using the strainer set up, though, I put everything into a steeping bag. Everything else was as on the video.
Being that I'm new, and just followed it, I'm now trying to figure out the semantics. Did I actually do a partial mash, or did I steep, or did I do more of a BiaB partial mash.
Either way, tasty results. I'm just trying to figure out when I replicate it, what to call it!

OK, I see. I was confused on the video when it called for 2 row and Crystal. According to the source I found on steeping, 2 row should not be steeped. But, it seemed to me, that's what the Basic Brewing guys were doing.
I made the last second decision when I grabbed a bag at my LHBS, and while brewing thought "Why should I worry with strainers and using 2 pots? I'll just use this bag." It seemed to work, anyway.
Thanks for the info!

The LHBS had the grains I needed for my partial mash! So I'll be brewing up the OVL partial tomorrow. 1.5 lbs Vienna malt 1.0 lb Munich malt 1 can Octoberfest Vienna Lager (maybe small bittering hop addition) WLP830 German Lager yeast

I don't post much here, but I read this great forum almost daily. I remember reading this topic quite a while ago and thought if I ever got into all-grain, that would be a cool thing to do. Well a few weeks ago, I had a can of HCCD laying around and thought of this topic. I checked recipes and found this one, Wilson's for HCCD Extra Special Bitter: http://www.mrbeerfans.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=52318&page=2I modified the recipe quite a bit for items that I had on hand. Instead of the DME I used 1.5 lbs of 2-row and mashed all the grains. With the small amount of grain and all that water in my BIAB process I got 85% efficiency... I'll never see that again. Instead of the Goldings I subbed Fuggles and used Danstar Windsor for the yeast. I bottled it tonight. With all my mods and subs I wasn't expecting much, but after tasting the flat beer, it's pretty darn good! It has the earthy hop taste of an Extra Special Bitter and a great malt taste that is definitely not all coming from the 2-row and crystal. I think you're on to something here, Professor. Thanks!

That's the thing...by the time you do a minimash, you could just do an AG BiaB batch with one more step! I agree...but I felt more safe doing a mini-mash to start with before diving head first into AG. Even with that, I still do a mix of AG, PM and extract.

...by the time you do a minimash, you could just do an AG BiaB batch with one more step! While I am not sure what is meant by "one more step" I'll agree there is something to that. It is mentioned on the second Basic Brewing video as well. To give a bit of perspective to it let's say that if you are making 5 gallons of beer you could just as easily make 10 gallons of beer. I guess this thread is aimed at the "what's the difference between steeping and mashing" crowd. With my own brewing setup there is a line at what I can do at 2-3 gallons and what I can do at 5 gallons. Can't really go much higher. I can do all grain at the 2-3 gallon range but not at 5 gallons (well, maybe a table beer). But I have done partial mashes to get a good 5 gallon beer. The thing is that a "partial mash" still relies on extract for about half of the wort. A hop boil may or may not even be needed if using HME as the extract. So it's a pretty simple thing to try. And I think it is the individual brewers epiphany to realize that once they cross the steeping/mashing/partial threshold they can say "so I can do all grain".

HCCD Cream Ale - Partial Mash Recipe HCCD Cream Ale - Partial Mash Style Cream Ale 2.13 gal 1.013 FG 5.0% 4.0% Use Mashed Extract Mashed Time 5 minutes Brewer The_Professor Partial Mash Recipe Characteristics Batch Estimated FG Alcohol by Volume Alcohol by Weight Recipe Gravity Recipe Bitterness Recipe Color Ingredients 1.052 OG 22 IBU 5° SRM Quantity 0.50 lb 1.21 lb 2.00 lb Quantity 1.00 oz Quantity 1.00 unit Grain Type Adjunct Extract Grain Type Pellet Notes Other Recipe Notes Batch Notes Flaked Corn MrB. High Country Canadian Draft Six-row (US) Hop MrB. High Country Canadian Draft Misc US-05 Dry Yeast 3 gallons of bottled water, one goes in the fridge. I heated 2 gallons of water to 160 in a 3.75 gallon pot. (Note: For the purpose of this recipe I will say there are two ways to mash malted grains. One is in a mash tun with a smaller volume of water followed by a hot water rinse (sparge), and the other is the Aussie Brew In A Bag method that can use the full volume of water needed from the begining. I am using a volume somewhere inbetween (as I will top off as needed) but more than a minimium since I will not perform a sparge. One quart of water per pound of grain would be a minimum and would require some sort of rinse or sparge to get the best efficiency.) I added the grain/flaked corn and let it sit covered for 5 minutes. The temp was 155. (Looking for the 152-156 range) At 20 min more the temp was below 150 so I returned the pot to high heat (slowly stirring) until it was above 155, then covered again. (Temps not holding good today, I heated the mash again at another 20 min) Preboil Brix 9.0 (1.037). (Mash was sorta 1HR reheating every 20 min, I don't count the reheating time) (Note: It is best to have some way to measure the grain conversion, hydrometer, refractometer, or iodine test) I just poured the wort into another pot using a strainer to catch the grain. (Discard the grain, keep the wort) So this is a pretty simple temperature hold and drain. Boil the wort for 1HR, no hop addition. (By the end of the boil the volume will be less and the gravity will be higher) (Note: Cream Ale style guidelines suggest 15-20 IBU. Mr. Beer lists the HCCD at 22 IBU with both booster and UME.) Add the High Country Canadian Draft HME after removing the pot from the heat. Cool the wort in an ice bath to pitching temps. 12.5 Brix (1.051) post boil (unknown volume) grain only. 20.0 Brix (1.084) on unknown volume. (To save ice I use cold water at 5 min and then 15 min first before using an ice bath) Pour the cooled wort into the Mr. Beer keg leaving behing the last bit with sediment (don't worry if some gets into the keg) Top off as desired (perhaps depending on your gravity readings) Final OG (to the 8.5 mark) 11.0 Brix (1.045) Looks good, Prof. What do you use to convert brix to SG?

And before I forget, my preference, in order for the WWW is: Witbier (pilsner, wheat, unmalted wheat, liquid yeast, bitter orange peel, spices) Hefeweisen (2row, wheat, liquid yeast) American wheat (2row, wheat, US-05, bittering hop addition) ...depends on what the LHBS has.
