I feel like someone has done this...maybe Dr. Dink? Of course, I think his was AG, but still, it could give you some ideas.

Is 1554 their Schwarzbier-ish beer? We may be able to come up with something that approximates it, if you can give us some more info on it.

hmmm...

probably not going to get close enough with just mr. beer ingredients. maybe Mr. Beer's Abbey Dubbel, Dubbel Trouble, Zealous Bock, or some other dark beer from their recipe list.

but, if you feel up for steeping some specialty grains, then there's probably some recipes out there that'll get you really close.

No, I did an AG version that came out awesome. Don't believe you will get there strictly with MB ingredients, but maybe a partial mash. You have to use a lager yeast like S23 at ale temps (63-65 degrees) to get the character right. The recipe is here: http://www.mrbeerfans.com/ubbthreads/ubb...html#Post140239, however I have since changed out the black patent with Carafa III and I add carapils to all my recipes for better head retention.

special B is pretty specific...its the deep caramel, sweet, raisiny notes that you get in a dubbel. It would be hard to get those flavors without it

Crystal 120 is probably the closest you'll get. It's a decent sub, though it's a bit lighter, and won't give you quite the same flavors, it'll get you close.

always milled grains. for steeping, BiaB or AG or PM. You won't get anything out of unmilled grains.

Ok thats what i figured but i would rather sound ignorant than ruin a brew. Any other tips for somebody trying their first BIAB?

FYI the link cardinalsfan posted is for a no sparge BIAB. My process is a double sparge via teabagging the grain bag.

Oh and I always use RO water and add my own minerals but that depends on the type of water in your area.

You start with all your water which is going to depend on grain absorption and boil off rate. A rough estimate is .12 gallons per pound of grain for absorption and 10-12% boil off depending on your equipment. It'll take a few batches to dial it in. I highly recommend purchasing Beersmith as it is a great way to help dial in your equipment.

Here is a pretty good step by step for no sparge. Just adjust to 2.4 gallons to fit your LBK.

A couple of days ago I threw away a bunch of old BYO magazines. I 'almost' hung on to one with a few extract and AG New Belgium recipes in there. One was the 1554. If anyone has the issue with the woman CEO from New Belgium on the cover, it'd be a great place to start.

Here's a link to another forum where someone posted the BYO clone recipe.

You could convert it to extract pretty easily by subbing extract for the base grains and steeping the rest.

I found that issue. It turns out I didn't throw it away. Jon's link provides the AG version. Keep in mind this is a 5 gallon recipe. Somebody with more recent experience with the MrBeer extracts can help sub in MrBeer for the listed extracts. The extract version has...

Extracts...
3.0 lbs of Briess Light dried extract
3.25 lbs of Munich Liquid extract

Steeping grains...

8 oz CaraPils
13 oz Munich malt (20L)
10 oz Chocolate Malt
1 oz Black Malt

Hops... 60 min Target @ whatever amount will give you 21 IBUs.
Wyeast 2124 Bohemian Lager or White Labs WLP830 @ 65 F... which is a weird temp BTW.

Ok, so as a Mr. Beer-based recipe, how about this:

1 can OVL
1 lb Amber DME (or can mellow amber UME, if you're going straight Mr. Beer)
1 pack booster

Steep 5 oz chocolate malt and 1/2 oz black patent.

Ferment with 1 pack W-34/70 @65°

Should get you in the ballpark, anyway.

Great start Jon. Couple tweaks- Skip the booster. I can't see why you would need it with the extra grains. I still suggest subbing the Black Patent for Carafa III. S-23 yeast as it has a higher temp tolerance.

The booster is just there to give it a bit more gravity without too much extra body, which extract plus steeping can lead to. But yeah, it's probably not needed.

I picked 34/70 only because it's the same strain as the wyeast and white labs reccomended yeast, and the wyeast version performed really well at ale temps in Northern Brewer's recent experiment with it. S-23 is a great choice too.

Did the NB experiment go as high as 65? I could see it in the high 50's but 65 might be pushing viability.

I think they got up to 66-68° on the fermometer on the carboy.

I used 34/70 in the low 60s in an Irish Red with good results, so I can believe it. Some fruitiness, but not a ton, and no detectable fusels or anything like that.
