I am new to the homebrew community and am very excited to try my first brew! Also if anyone has any recipes for a canadian brew that they've tried I would greatly appreciate your comments! Thanks and Happy Drinking!

How about something like this:

1 can Mr. Beer High Country Canadian Draft
1 lb extra-light/pilsner DME (or 1 can Mr. Beer Pale Export UME)
(optional: 1 pack booster)

Ferment as cool as you can with 1 pack Fermentis Saflager W-34/70...ideally no warmer than 60° ambient, but as long as you keep the temp of the fermenting beer no higher than 65-68°, you should make a fine canadian-style lager-esque beer.

Ferment for 2-3 weeks (3 weeks if fermenting in the 50s, 2 should be fine in the 60s), carb around 70 in the bottles for 2 weeks (3 weeks or longer may be required if temps are much below 70°), then fridge for as long as you can stand (4 weeks will get ideal results, but nobody here will fault you if you try one earlier--just take notes if you do, and try to wait a week between tastings to get a feel for how beer changes as it conditions).

Oh, and don't forget to head on over to the welcoming center and introduce yourself!

Good luck!

i like the looks of this! though, i would add maybe .25 oz of cascade, hallertau, or cluster hops at flameout... just to get a little more hop essence out of the HME.

An alternative to the lager yeast would be to use either Nottingham or US=05. If you brew those near 60, you get an ale that is not too far from a lager in taste.

I'll ditto this.

Canadian beer is not really a style all by itself (like IPA is a style). Sounds to me that you are looking for a good lager, maybe a nice pale ale.

I'm guessing he means something like Molson Canadian, which is in the light lager spectrum...anywhere from light american lager to a dortmunder export.

Thanks for the ideas smile Also sorry for the vagueness, to be a little more specific I am looking for a beer with a light to mild flavor that finishes crisp. I did google LBBP and the Big Fly Pilsner (thanks natural320) is currently on top of my list for my next brew. If anyone has any other suggestions for a brew that might fit i would appreciate your knowledge. Thanks and Happy Drinking!

For a crisp clean finish you will definately want to ferment on the cooler side like everyone has suggested. Lager temperatures if possible (50's) and low ale temperatures (low 60's) if the lower temperature can't be maintained.
There are many low budget techniques for achieving cooler temps. Check out the ideas for a swamp cooler. Many people here use them with great success.

While I am Canadian I've lived most of my life in The States although I'm less than half an hour's drive to Canada. I've tried many Canadian brews and used to be a big fan but similar to the big American beers everything has been cheapened up. I swear even Molson Canadian or Molson Golden don't taste the same as they used to. I've tried making a few Canadian style beers including lagers (using Cooper's among others including HCCD) but sadly have not come upon a Canadian clone or anything worth repeating.

Oh, they were decent beers just not anything I would equate to the "old" true Canadian lagers or ales.

The closest I can think of is trying an English bitter formula and using lager yeasts for the crispness. I always remember the big 2 (labatt and molson) as being more bitter (and flavorful) than the big 3 in the south but that's been 15+ years ago.
