Anybody Prep Tap Water with a 15 min boil?

I often have a bitter plastic taste from my beer. I think my keg is clean & it sits in the one-step for 20 - 30 mins before the wort is added.

My tap water tastes good, but was reading boiling the water would remove chlorine & it is the city water causing off flavors?

Also, don't have a two gallon pot so I'd have to boil two batches & cool by letting the pot sit in the fridge overnight?

Does this work? Are You Prepping the water?

I use distilled or bottled drinking water by the gallon. Easy to use and measure out.

also it prolly won't take all night to cool. an ice bath and an hour or so should get it to room temp.

Before you go this far, I'd try using two gallons of distilled water. That will truly let you know if it's your water that's the issue, or if it's something else.

Have you been disassembling your spigot and cleaning it after each batch? Lots of nooks and crannies for nasties to hide out in in the spigot.

yup, i'd go with distilled water. only 99 cents per gallon, usually, so getting three gallons doesn't add much cost to the brew day.

and, i think you can just let the water sit overnight, in your brewpot without a lid, to let the chlorine off gas. that way you don't need to waste the energy of turning on the stove. just pour your water into a pot, let it sit overnight, and you're good to go. or am i thinking of sulfur?

Should work with either one.

Another option, since you have two one gallon pots, is to pour the water back and forth between the two pots several times. That should get the dissolved chlorine to offgas.

However, there's a chance that your water has chloramines in it, instead of chlorine. Those don't offgas.

BUT, you can use camden tablets to dechlorinate the water, even if it uses chloramines. Crush up about half a tablet in the water (1 tablet can treat up to something like 20 gallons). Then just let the water sit overnight to let the sulfur from the camden tablet offgas, and you should be good to go.

That said, I'd try one batch with distilled water, and see if you notice any difference. Good luck!

Edit Reason: Fixed camden tablet ratio

I would use distilled water. It's a pretty easy way to isolate the water as a possible cause of the problem.

Interesting,

boiled a stock pot of water & put it in the fridge.

Morning inspection shows on the bottom of the pot is a a white film of granular substance. I think it kind of tastes like salt.

Is this just from "Hard Water" or maybe I should call culligan?

The water tastes fine from the tap & never noticed the deposits before.

Yup, that's just mineral deposits precipitating out...it can happen with boiled and cooled water.

I pay 37 cents per gallon for RO water at the grocery store, they have a dispenser and you bring in your own containers( you can reuse them) and its 37 cents a gallon. If you can look for one of those
