Any wheat beer recommendations that I can make with my Mr. Beer kit?

I did the pale ale one already. I bought new LME (bavarian wheat 3.3 lb) and I am very lost on what to do with it now. It feels like I have read so many conflicting articles. Also do I have to add anything beside the LME and water to make my wort? I would like my finished product to be above 4 abv, preferably 5ish. I am new to this and when I look all these recipes they look more like a list of ingredients. Its all a bit confusing to me.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

yes, with plain LME you do have to do a hops boil. you also need yeast. you can make a beer around 5abv with the 3.3# LME.

my suggestion? get something like hallertau or liberty and add 0.5 oz and boil with the LME for 30 mins. grab a liquid yeast for hefeweizens and use that. should be a good mix.

I agree, if you got a LHBS near by, pick up some hops and yeast. I would suggest either Wyeast 1010 or Wyeast 3068, these are both liquid. If you want to save a couple bucks get Safale WB-06 dry yeast and use about half of that packet.

I did a similar recipe my 3rd brew and it was one of the best beers I have made. I used the Wyeast 3068 and I think that made the beer.

to keep it super simple and elaborate on CF here, you should do the following:
obtain an ounce of Hallertau hops
get a activator smack pack of Wyeast 3068
these 2 items should cost you around $9ish dollars depending on your LHBS

read the yeast pack directions, and smack it a few hours (or was it the night before?) before you plan to brew

how big of a pot do you have? assuming that you have at least an 8 quart one , fill it about 3/4 full of water, turn on the burner and stir in your LME while it is heating to a boil.

once the boil is reached, use 3/4 ounce of the Hallertau hops (save the rest in a ziplock bag in your freezer) and just toss 'em into your pot. it will look like a mess, but don't worry about it, it all settles out.

go with the 30 minute boil, and this will give you about 12 IBU (the 1/2 oz was only 8...kinda low) according to qbrew (search for it, it will help you out!).

then simply chill for a bit, add it to you keg, and top off with water (shooting for a wort temperature of about 70 degrees)as you would normally. dump your yeast in, and keep the keg on a cookie sheet for a few days and the lid barely screwed on

why? because this yeast is VIOLENT! and will 99% likely try to blow out the top. if/when it does, simply wipe it down and let it keep going. if you want to (and see it happening before it is too late), you can use a SANITIZED spoon to gently skim the top of the yeast off as the fermentation starts. trust me, you will definitely know when the time is right to do this. this could potentially prevent the blowout from happening.

let it run a 12-14 day ferment, then bottle/carb/condition as per normal. it is one of the fastest turnaround beers, and you will be enjoying it about 30 or so days from your brew day, as wheat beers IMO are best fresh!

sounds like a lot, but it really is quite easy wink

Welcome!

For it to be beer, there have to be hops and yeast involved. Yes, a lot of the recipes are just a list of ingredients. It can be a little overwhelming.

There are hopped wheat malt extracts available for Mr. Beer, either from the Mr. Beer site or from Amazon, which might be a little easier than figuring out using hops themselves, though you would need to stash your leftover LME in the fridge. The two Mr. Beer wheat HMEs are Whispering Wheat Weizenbier (WWW) and Witty Monk Witbier.

If you want to get Mr. Beer hopped malt extract (HME), one good way is to go on Amazon and get ones that qualify for the 4 for 3 deal, especially if they're refills that have two cans, not a can of HME plus a booster (like http://www.amazon.com/Mr-Beer-Witbier-Re...127&sr=8-14). You can also go to the Mr. Beer site and just pick up single cans of extract (http://www.mrbeer.com/category-exec/category_id/88).

Don't forget you'll need to sanitize everything, so you'll want to pick up some One Step or Star San if you don't get Mr. Beer refill packs.

If you want potentially quick answers, feel free to post questions in the Shout Box. There's usually someone around to answer, or at least point you in a good direction.

And this recipe would make the appropriate amount of beer to fit in the Mr. Beer keg? And yes I have an 8 qt pot.

Also thanks so much for the help!

yep, CF is correct...what we laid out was for your LBK (lil' brown keg) sized batch! if you want an idea of what it will look like, I posted a pic of my similar version HERE ignore the stuff about steeping (for now wink ) but otherwise your brew day will be similar. I used dry Munich wheat yeast (even though other people suggested the liquid ones) because I am/was? cheap...trust us, the extra few bucks will be like night and day! the Munich is good enough, but the liquid wheat yeasts are outstanding!

Are their any thoughts on adding some malto-dextrin to this recipe listed by natural320. I bought some at the homebrew store and was just wondering if maybe I should try to see how it comes out.

Didnt mean to tamper with your recipe natural320. Dont be mad!

I wouldn't. Natty's recipe will already have plenty of body, and that's all maltodextrin really adds.

That said, it's your beer...you can do whatever you want!

Any suggestions on how to prime for a LBK recipe? Should I stick to the Mr. Beer guidelines? Or possibly boil my sugar in water and add? I'm not sure just how much priming solution I should use.

use a carbonation calculator - http://hbd.org/cgi-bin/recipator/recipator/carbonation.html?14194034#tag

mr. beer guidelines are too high in my opinion. yes, boil the sugar with an equal amount of water and cool it before adding to beer.

If you're bottle priming, you can just put the sugar in the bottle. If you're batch priming, that's when you do the boil with water thing. Rather than use a calculator, I think I just went with about 2/3 what Mr. Beer suggested and it seems to have worked.
