When I made my mead with the wife's uncle he used THIS as his sanitizer. any one have any experence with this? My main interest is I use star san now but everytime I mix it up, our water sucks so bad, it is cloudy with in a couple hours. I have had it not last thru a brew day. Wife's uncle has used exclusively for years and says it lasts fine even with our water.

I know, I have been force to do that too, I was just wondering about what other options were out there.

if you add another couple drops of Star San to the cloudy solution, it might clear up... you're basically "recharging" the pH of the solution. but, as long as the pH of the solution stays below 3 (IIRC), then it's ok, even if it's cloudy.
but, yeah... distilled water.

Isn't that basically a cambden tablet? which is used to kill wild yeast, or to stop fermentation to create a sweet mead...? Never heard of it as a sanitizer...

Sounds like it may not be a real sanitizer. One of the videos I saw is below (check 3:35) and he mentions sodium metabisulfite to kill wild yeast.

the sites I have found use 2oz per gallon as a sanitizer, and like 1/10 of an oz per gallon for brewing additive

No problem Ryan. Iodophor is a pretty popular sanitizer, and has been around for a long time. Instead of not fearing the foam, like with StarSan, don't fear the stain (on plastics...it'll leave a little bit of a yellowish-brown discoloration).

Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't Iodophor need to be rinsed?

Nope, like starsan, in the proper dillution, it's a no-rinse sanitizer. But it does have a higher contact time...1-2 minutes vs the 30 seconds for starsan.

Bleach is another option. If interested: "March 29, 2007 - Sanitizing with Bleach and Star San Charlie Talley from Five Star Chemicals tells us best practices in using household bleach and Star San in sanitizing equipment." http://www.basicbrewing.com/index.php?page=basic-brewing-radio-2007
