great episode of BIAB from BrewingTv...

Brewing TV - Episode 54: Jake's Got a Brand New Bag from Brewing TV on Vimeo.

... in case anyone was looking for a visual of the BIAB process. Deathbrewer also has a good picture tutorial of stovetop BIAB over on HomeBrewTalk.

simple. space saving (since you don't need to store a mash tun or other large equipment). you will need a grain bag... but you can get a two pack of five gallon mesh paint strainer bags at Lowe's or HD for $3, and that'll easily last you 8 or 10 brews.

everyone kind of has their own little method and tweaks to the process, but it's an easy way to do all grain brewing.

I think a bit his lower efficiency comes from not squeezing his grains, leaving a lot of goodness in the bag.

I'm much less impressed with NB than I used to be. My LHBS is very good and very local, so I've never felt the need to purchase online (though I do buy hops online). I used to visit NB's site to look at the recipes, but they dropped the promash files so there is much less detail. They also still call for secondary fermentation in their recipes, while most (that I've seen) no longer see a need/benefit to do a secondary for most beers. While this video is OK, it's a bit late to the party - BIAB is not exactly new. And is it really taking them this long to figure out why their efficiency is low? Is their google broken?

So, call me a Negative Nancy, but it seems like they want to sell secondary fermenters and DME.

So does your lhbs give out recipes for their kits online for free? I am glad you have and like your lhbs that is great but not everyone has one so places like northern brewer are great, plus they carry a lot of grains and hops a lot of places do not. I just don't get why you dislike northern brewer? Everything I have ever heard and experienced was exceptional so if you want to complain about them have a real reason.

i like BrewingTV... i like it a lot... except "the cobra", that's a bit much. NB is the reason BrewingTV exists, so they're fine by me. i've never ordered from them, so i can't speak to that, but they seem to be pretty nice and have all the little niche products that someone might need... and their new store (in milwaukee, iirc?) looks like it's incorporating beer culture (beer classes, cooking classes, pr brewer speaker series) into the LHBS experience... that's awesome.

Their new store is in Minneapolis and it is amazing, they built in a sweet training area where you can learn to brew on their system and use new products. The store is laid out great and has everything you could imagine, I was like a kid in a candy store

I found it ironic that Jake (VP of Marketing) was using a totally inadequate bag (too small of an opening) and that NB does not sell a voile bag that most BIAB websites recommend.

I said I was less impressed. That's all. OK, perhaps I was a bit strong. But, I used have the impression that they were more involved/hands-on in brewing. For example, providing recipe specifics (IBUs, SRM, etc) in the past was part of it.
Old style NB recipe detail

And while I'm OK with it, I'm surprised (not really) that the die-hard rehydrate fans here give them a pass on pitching the yeast in this video.

As for my lhbs, no, he does not have an online presence - not his thing. He doesn't sell his own kits, but will put together any recipe a customer comes in with or work with you to generate one on the spot. He'll also share one of his brews with you. A different business than NB. I realize not everyone has this option. Still, I used to have a different impression of NB.

You realize they provide everything you need to recreate their recipes right on their website...

Here for example

If you click additional information under any recipe it will give you the information and the directions..what more do you need?

Yes, they provide the .pdf recipe as you posted. They did this in the past. What they used to also provide is detail.
Caribou Slobber
I guess I don't "need" any of it, but it's good to know hop alphas, efficiency, formulas used, etc., to compare with brewing software, for example.

hmm, didn't even notice that. good catch, dgs. while i always rehydrate (and jamil recommends rehydrating, as well) the mr. malty pitching calculator says that for 3 gallons of an average gravity wort, half a pack of dry yeast is needed. if you don't rehydrate, about half the whole pack will die, so half a pack of cells is exactly what gets into the beer. if you do rehydrate that whole packet of dry yeast and pitch it all, you'll be even better off... as i've found out.

I too use this method for many reasons (cost, space and time) and I jus twatched the video and noticed that mishap as well psuchunk03. When using dry yeast I always rehydrate and try to be as sanitary as possible.
