Well I have the water on heating to 155 degrees and realize the LHB store forgot to put in the muslin bags... I made the decision to use panty hose as muslin bags. not sure if its too filtering for the grain though... anyone rednecked it before? should I let it steep longer??? any suggestions???

i would have just let the grains free float, then strained out the grains over a second pot... just me though. i think you'll be fine? ... never used pantyhose before... so... not sure.

I'm sure you'll be fine. You may not get quite as much sugars out of the grains, but you'll still get some, along with flavor and aroma...and that's what you're really looking for with a steep.

yup, pantyhose is just nylon and some hop and grain bags are made from nylon. I just hope the heat didnt do anything AND that no colors or dyes leached out of the pantyhose if they were colored.

you should be ok though. I would have used a strainer or colander and just threw the grain in as is.

I used them a couple times without issue - my LHBS actually suggested it. I then switched to paint strainer bags.

Well I have brewed this kit before. I did steep the grains for 60min rather than 20-30min. The hose didnt change color after the steep and I rinsed them out... The steeped water tasted as usual maybe a bit darker and a bit more intense... I kinda liked using hose more than a muslin bag due to I could squeeze the dark robust juice out of the grains without all the debris making it back into the base beer. If it turns out the same I may have found a new grain bag.. The nylons held up fine in the heat also no worries!

Good to know. Depending on the volume of what you're steeping, knee highs might be a very economical option. If I go that route, I'll just have to make sure I use NEW ones, not used ones ;-)
