I'm brewing Mr. Beer's "Old Auncle Arnold" recipe with 2 cans of HME, 1 UME, and a pouch of German Ale liquid yeast. The pouch said it was enough for 5 gallons, but the recipe said to put the whole pouch in my 2 gallon "keg". I put it in a back closet to ferment and it stays around 66 degrees. Checked it after a week and there were signs of foam leaking out around the top and running down the side. Is this normal? I sanitized everything well before brewing, but this is the first overflow I have seen. What do you guys think?

you def did not add too much yeast...

what is the temp in there? I am going to assume it was too warm and caused a very active fermentation. If you temps are good under 68 then maybe that yeast is very active..some yeast can be very active and blow out the top...nothing really to worry about as long as you temps are in order...

though you do need to worry about blowing the top off, so you should make sure it is not screwed on very tight or the top can blow off...

Ok, maybe I didn't let it swell enough first. I gave it about 4 hours, but I guess most people leave it for a day.

Sounds like you have a very healthy fermentation. Like Stinkfist said be sure to keep your temperatures in check. An active fermentation can drastically raise the legs temperatures; if they get too high you may get a fusel alcohol flavor in your beer. As long as you keeps the temps down, you should be golden.

Some recipes are notorious for foam over. Keeping the LBK on/in something to contain possible leaks is a good idea. It's not a case of too much yeast, just a case of the yeast being very active because of conditions, whether it was warmth or just really happy to dig into the sugars.

sounds like your questions got answered and for future reference, there is almost no such thing as too much yeast. Too little, yes, but overpitching is rare.

The only thing I want to add is that if you got foam on the outside of the LBK, be sure to clean it with some one step. You dont want mold growing there.

Good luck!
