3 theoretically complete batches for $12.99 designed for the Beer Machine. Anyone tried any of the Beer Machine refills in a Mr. Beer LBK before?

http://www.cabelas.com/product/The-Beer-...llProducts&

(I hear the phone call to order is to make sure the person ordering is of drinking age.)

I have not...but, hey...give it a shot!

Even if each refill is just the equivalent of 1 Mr. Beer HME, that's still a great deal. Just add 1 lb DME and BAM! Beer!

I say give it a shot.

interesting. wasn't there a guy here around christmas that was trying out the actual beer machine? wonder how that went...

oh, if you try these Em, you need to "overfill" your LBK to 2.6 gallons...which would be right near the the "quart" stamp on the side of the keg.

but I see no reason why this wouldn't work out

Or just have slightly stronger beer than intended.

one of the reviews is from someone who used it with mr. beer.

i think the beer machine guy had some issues with carbonation and the co2 carts. not sure though.

I have not tried anything meant for the Beer Machine but I have tried several HME's from various competitors and brewed then in the LBK. What first comes to mind is the Brewferm series. Thses kits are intended to make 9 liters of beer which works out well for our keg. I've made the Trippel a few times and was pleased with how it came out. I've also done Cooper's, Edme, Munton's, a Northern Brewer English Pale Ale and maybe an Ironmaster?

Just about any beer can be fermented in the LBK once the recipe is right sized.

I'm planning to do the brewferm tripel soon. Did you use corn sugar or more malt mammy? Did you use their yeast or a liquid yeast?

Without looking at the recipe, I wanted to mention that the Belgians use beet sugar (sucrose) in their recipes. So that's what I'd lean towards using.

That said, I don't think you'll go wrong by following the kit's directions, or Mammy's advice on this one.

The first time I brewed this up I used corn sugar and Saflager S-23. Yes, I brewed an Abbey Style Trippel Ale as a lager - Mammy the Maverick. What can I say, it was February and my basement, where I do most of my brewing was perfect for a lager but really too cool for an ale. It came out pretty good. I did take a few hits on here for making it as a lager but it was my beer. Oh and back then I didn't have a hydrometer.

The second time I brewed it up I used the yeast that came with it along with some light DME and a cup of beet sugar. The OG was 1.080 and the FG was 1.024 which I wasn't real happy about. I think D Rock was brewing something similar at about the same time and he had the same issue trying to get that FG down below 1.020. It still tasted good and I think the abv was around 7.3%. I plan on doing one of these again soon and will most likely use Nottignham or Safale S-05. It's easier to make ales this winter in my basement with the mild temps we've had outside this season.

awesome. I was planning to do it with half DME and half candi syrup/sugar. I was gonna use their yeast and maybe t-58 or some liquid. My LHBS sells brewferm kits, I just need to get one and open a fermenter for about a month lol. Thanks mammy!!

Do you get 3 flavors or can you pick the same kind for all 3? If I'm understanding the description, you get 28 12oz bottles.. per pack? or is it per 3 pack? I'm getting 2.625 gallons, which would fit in the LBK either way. It'd be interesting to try.

3 of the same flavor, from what I read at the website...so pick one you like!

Each pack is supposed to give you 28 12 oz servings of beer, and you 3 packs.

Seems like a pretty good deal for HME, if they're any good. Even if you end up having to add a pound of DME per recipe (in case their directions call for added sugar), it's still not a bad deal.

If it means anything, I think it's DHME, dry hopped malt extract.

I just drive to my LHBS (local home brew shop). Here's their website as you can order over the web as well:

http://www.homebrewing.org/

It looks like most or all of their HME kits are on sale but I didn't see the Brewferm Trippel. They do have a Dark Abbey Style in stock. Many other online home brew sites carry them as well. Midwest Supplies comes to mind.

http://www.midwestsupplies.com/?utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Midwest_Brewing

Actually didn't see them at Midwest but they have them here:

You guys got my mouth watering for a Trippel and I went ahead and ordered from Annapolis. Since there was $7.95 flat rate shipping I ordered two.

thanks mams...I hadn't heard of these kits, and I was actually having a hard time finding a retailer to check these out. learning new stuff, love it!

hmmm...for $18 for a relatively "big" beer style, are these (brewferm) that good? doesn't seem bad at all...

I used several of the Coopers kits in my LBK's a couple years back.
They are pretty nice especially with added hops and steeping
grains. Only thing is the cans are bittered for 6 us gallons.
So you can third the cans for a lighter version or half the
cans for a stronger brew.
You will also have to add the proper amount of dried malt extract
to make up the fementables. Austin Homebrew has a nice selection.

Hey natural, in case you haven't noticed Mr. Beer isn't cheap. I still participate on occasion when they have a sale but their regular prices are somewhat steep.

Oh and yeah, the Brewferm at 18 bucks a pop is a pretty good deal.

I don't follow? did I miss something? I've been brewin' over 2 years now...and haven't paid full price on a MB kit since the beginning for that very reason.

so unless you perceived me as being a d--k or something, I genuinely had never heard of the company (went from MB to AG...nothing else in between), and my google search went to sites where people were talking about the brewferm kits, not selling them.

nice though. I appreciate a little love here on valentine's day

Dang, I sure didn't mean anything by that. Maybe I could have worded it better. I just thought maybe you were unaware that there were cheaper alternatives. As far as extract vs. AG we've had that argument a few times and I've been told that if you buy grains in bulk you can definitely brew cheaper than extract even figuring in heating costs so I won't try to fight that argument again.

Sorry natural if that came off as harsh.

no worries! I thought that I said something wrong. and the AG vs. extract "argument" shouldn't even be an argument...

well all know that AG is better! haha

just kidding wink as long as the end result is beer...the ingredients and methods used are relative only to the brewer. I can do an AG cream ale or simple hefe for less than $10 (MB size), but it takes hours to make the wort. conversely, I could buy the Witty Monk premium kit for a bit less than $20, and have it brewed and the yeast pitched in less than a half hour. both end results are tasty, neither method is "better" except to the brewer. que sera, sera
