There is a rather large microbrew festival held in Eugene every year to support the local public radio station. In addition, they also host a BJCP Homebrew Competition. I figured I would throw my hat into the ring and see what happens. I figure if nothing else I'll get some impartial feedback on how I could improve my beers. I keg everything so I had to develop a way to bottle the beer. I could have purchased a beer gun but I could not justify the cost at this point in time...So I built a simple system that accomplishes the same thing. Build notes are posted in the DIY section. Once I got all the bottles filled and capped I labeled them and sent them on their way to be judged. It should be noted that the club name entered was mrbeerfans.com and the extra paper in the box is the recipe and brewer's notes required for the categories entered. I went and picked up my score sheets today: Oaked Chocolate Cherry Stout – 23A – Specialty Beer – Score 30 Oaked Chocolate Cherry Stout – 22C – Wood Aged Beer – Score 25 Honey Ace – 8C – Extra Special / Strong Bitter – Score 29.33 Yamata Harvest Ale – 21A – Spice, Herb, Vegetable Beer – Score 36 LDLW – 6D – American Wheat or Rye Beer – Score 26.67 Some interesting things of note, the same beer entered in different categories ended up with quite different scores. It might have also done well in the fruit beer section. Tasting notes from the judges are generally helpful. I know how I could easily improve the stout (and I knew some of it prior to submitting as well). I also know that some of the lower scores are due to the beer not being to “style”. But hey, I brew the beer I like to drink. The judges for the Yamata Harvest Ale were National Rank BJCP, a Professional Brewer, and a Recognized BJCP Judge. I'm very very happy to announce another ribbon for the MrBeerFans.Com community! WOOT!
