Mr Beer Keg Spigot MOD

Tired of holding your spigot open? Beer coming out the top of the spigot when transferring your custom brew with a transfer hose? Here’s a quick fix and I’ve included the part numbers so you can MOD your Keg too.

The Keg on the left has a SPI-B Bottling Spigot around $3.29 at most Internet supply stores. The spout is 3/8" OD allowing the attachment of 3/8" ID tubing or to a 3/8” OD bottle filler. (True Brew Bottle Filler, Part # BF-C 2.55 ) I got mine at homebrewadventures. I find the 3/8” tubing easier to handle and only 1 section is needed to either transfer or bottle with.

It also can rotate 360°.

Use the washer or nut to trace around for the 1” hole. Make SURE to align the hole to start from the bottom of the Keg. The bigger nut on this assembly will hit the trub channel in the bottom of the Keg if you try to mount it lower in the Keg.
Shot into Keg to show enlarged hole higher than trub channel.

Spigot shown using original hole, and enlarged towards the top of the Keg.

Tools I used, took about 5 min at the most.

I hand tighten the nut on the washers, (one on each side), then use some hot tap water inside the Keg to heat up the spigot. Then give it another ¼ turn.

I use this position to sanitize the spigot, One Step in the Keg usually about ¼ full. Open it, wait till it stops.

Happy Brewing!
Monty

Very Good!
I'm such a klutz, But that never stopped me before. My LHBS carries a similar spigo for $3.00. I may have to try it out after my next 2 batches are done.

Thank you Monty from a proud member of the MacClellan clan..."THINK ON".

I just successfully modified two kegs with my dremel and when my third fermenter comes in next month (with my Brew Club order) I have another spigot ready !

Yeah, I guess you'll have to suck it up and pay the 10 bucks for a replacement keg if you screw it up

I just modified my 3 kegs, my piece of advice is to screw them on really tightly. I had some leaks until I gave them a good hard turn.

I'd like to give this a shot with my 2 kegs. I don't have the power tool, is that going to be an issue?

The grinder was used to round out the hole.

Assuming I wouldn't scratch the inside of the keg, I could probably use a sandpaper on a well cut hole then.
