"Boil The Hops, Not The Malt Extract" By: Steve Bader

Here's the only guy I've found who comes right out in print and says this--and he's referring to extract, DME/LME; hopped/unhopped, etc.

With all of my Mr Beer batches this is what I've done...added the HME and UME after flame out, and the results were pretty good.

I'm brewing a batch up tonight of an Austin Homebrew kit and wondering if I should do the same sort of thing

Interesting, sounds like the title should be "Boil The Hops, Not ALL The Malt Extract" since they say to put in 1 cup of it.

In any case, not sure I am going to change what I do yet. I may try it at some point to see what happens.

That's interesting but I don't know much about this Master Bader guy. Some folks here say to boil the LME from the LHBS for an hour to remove any DMS. What's Bader say about that?

So simple even aka might get it--and w/o all the dos, don'ts, disclaimers and qualifiers, etc.

As always, KISS!

I liked the advice to add no more than 2 lbs of unhopped extract per gallon of water better.

Can I first wort hop an extract batch by "steeping" some hops in sparge temp water for 20-30 minutes then adding to a 60 minute boil?

That's the advice I had been going off of for my recent non-Mr. Beer recipes...its turned out decently, but I'm curious if this way is more efficient in terms of using the hops

There are many online who advocate 100% boiling of extract (hopped/unhopped, dme/lme, etc.)and anything else ranging to no boiling at all, and and all kinds of bs in-between, together with a whole sh!tpot of ifs, ands, buts, disclaimers and qualifiers, etc.

I find Mr. Bader's info on this to be a simple, straight forward set of instructions for the beginner as well as others who have been influenced by much misinformation online. Good for beginners, and others as well who might want to rethink some of the bum scoop we have digested along the way. Good place to regroup, and experiment/unlearn some of the things we assumed to be so.

Some malt is needed when boiling bittering and/or flavoring hops. I've been using 1/2 the recipe's DME at the get'go.

Most of a recipe's malt extract...dry and/or liquid...can and should be added 'late' in the boil (@10-15") to reduce twangification and SRM darkening. Extract(s) added toward the boil's end will have more than plenty-o-time to pasteurize.

Boiling hopped-LME in not recommended.
