I tried bottling using Star San for the first time yesterday. I sanitized the bottles with Star San. A lot of foam remained in the bottles. I found, that when I filled the bottles with the beer from the fermenter. The foam came to the top of the then half filled bottle and spilled out. I went back to finish the session with One Step sanitizer. Thanks for your attention. I would invite input.

Don't fear the foam. If there's enough left to spill out, I wipe it up. The foam doesn't hurt anything, just looks a little scary.

+1 It can be hard to ignore, but having pushed foam out of a couple of thousand bottles with beer, I can report that there is nothing to fear.

I use SS to sanitize my bottles...too. After the initial treatment...a lot of foam remains. I let them sit about 15" then pour out what I can.

When bottling...they'll fill about 3/4 before the foam bubbles out the top. I go on the the next bottle and the next...then come back to the 1st where much of the foam has settled.

Some have reported they just let it foam-over and keep going until the bottle is full.

+10000000 !! DON'T FEAR THE FOAM!

I use Star San, too. No worries about it spilling. Just wipe it up. That being said, I do turn my bottles upside down to drain any Star San liquid out of the bottles before filling (and to keep track of which bottles I've filled), but the foam is ok.

In my typical bottling session I go through and dunk my bottles in Star San solution until they are about 1/4 full. I pull them out of the bucket shaking and put them in a rack upside down to let the foam drain. By the time I'm done sanitizing, the first bottles are mostly foam free.

If I am doing a quick bottle or two they are often quite full of foam. It is rather messy but I just fill the bottle and let the foam errupt out the top while keeping my eye on the liquid level. When the liquid is to the proper level I go ahead and cap. Then after I've filled all my bottles they go into the shower for a quick rinse to clean the outside of the bottles.

Agree the foam can be a hassle. But StarSan is probably the most effective sanitizer out there. And the foam is part of the reason.

Seriously, listen to the above. Don't. Fear. The foam. And, when the foam spills out onto the counter and you wipe it up, you can later mention to your wife/girlfriend that you sanitized the counter today.

To minimize the amount of foam, don't shake the bottles, roll them instead. Or you can do what I do, and like Herb said, just fill them all the way with SS, let them sit 30 sec and dump.

'Rolling' and 'not shaking' is a great suggestion which will now be a part of my process.
