well i got my "grade b" corny in today.. I'm assuming this is a "firestone" keg since the pop-off valve is different and the dispensing tube isn't curved.. at least from what I've read that's the difference?? I may be wrong?

Anyways... I opened up the box and the keg has a big ole "ROOT BEER" sticker on it! I opened up the lid and there is a faint smell of root beer!

I know these kegs come cleaned and all... so I'm wondering if the root beer smell will cause a problem with the brew?

I know I've read that people have used PET bottles and/or fermenting buckets that have had root beer in them and it caused a funky smell/taste to their beer.

I can't see why the smell would be hanging around in a metal can and I should be able to get the smell out...

any thoughts?

Well i recieved my system today..But not really happy brewer..but i'm sure the guy will make it right like his ad says...1st the ad on his website says "All of Standard kits are built with this regulator. It costs a little more, but it is worth every penny!" This is listed under the Taprite Regulater ..mine have the economy series...Then for the super bowl sale was suppose to get the 10#CO2 tank, i got the 5#..the only way not to get the 10# was to call as i read the ad as it was automatic swap....one keg does leak from the lid but new seals are included..mine are relitively beat up but no loose rubber..and like Jakes one smells like Rootbeer.but i think the caustic cleaner will work... With filling bottles and such i really wanted that 10# tank..Jeff

I hope when you call they resolve all your issues! Sounds like they made a lot of mistakes with your order...

I had called and spoke to Ben at Keg Connection a couple of days ago about the keg I got with the Root Beer smell..

I told him from what i had read on different forums that I was afraid the beer would be ruined by the Root Beer smell.

Ben said they do quite a few brews themselves and have used the root beer kegs. He assured me it would NOT affect the taste of the beer i made and that the smell would be in that keg until I used it for my first batch. He also suggested removing all the old o-rings and replacing them with the new rings provided and soaking the entire keg again in a cleaner.

Sooo, I took it all apart yesterday and there was a strong smell of root beer from the inlet and outlet gaskets etc etc.. I also noticed the inlet tube was plastic and I think it may need to be replaced...

I filled the entire keg up with hot water and used the cleaning solution I got from them when i made my original purchase. I dropped the lid and the two posts and disassembled poppets down in the solution to soak for a day or so... Hopefully that along with the new gaskets will kill the smell.. If not I'm going to take Ben's word for it and keg a Brown Ale that's due in the next few days and see how it goes..

Well they will resolve my regulater issue..but they said they must have ended the sale before i ordered on feb 2nd..ha.. i think not as i got the super bowl discount and that was part of the sale...but i dont argue if they want to be that way...I will find out after use if i need more co2 and take care of it elsewhere if i do..otherwise i'm happy brewer...Jeff
